We know that there is something off with Joy Boy and the 100y Void Century timeline. We tried to fix this issue by assuming Joy Boy was a giant with a 300-400y lifespan thus making him fully in charge of AK from the beginning to the end of the VC. With Egghead latest chapters, we learnt that Joy Boy was not from Elbaf but from AK, that he didn’t have a giant but standard size body, that he was the first pirate of history and that he didn’t succeed at becoming "King".
This means we may have to reconsider the full history and the place of Joy Boy in it. If Joy Boy is considering to close the Void Century then it makes sense he didn’t open the Void Century war against the 20 kingdoms - he probably wasn’t even born at that time. Initial war between AK and 20 kingdoms may have been related to access to natural resources. The fact that he was from AK and the first pirate of history (= outlaw) and didn’t succeed at becoming King implies he never was the AK leader.
If Joy Boy was born during the Void Century war in AK, he would have to join the AK army as a military conscript. He travelled to various islands with AK army including Elbaf where he discovered the legend about the Sun God Nika. Once back to AK after a battle, Joy Boy was given access to the AK’s Dream Fruit technology (created to increase the strength of AK soldiers) with which he created the Nika DF. Then Joy Boy decided to discover the world by himself to understand better the VC conflict and find another possible answer enabling everyone to develop in peace - he deserted the AK military and fled abroad becoming an AK outlaw and the first pirate of history.
Joy Boy recruited a lot of crewmates in various islands (whose descendants are known as the D.) and witnessed the use of Uranus by AK raising the sea level. Joy Boy finally succeeded and came up with an alternative plan to the AK plan that was supposed to reconcile everyone and made him King of AK by ending the Void Century war (free energy / Dream fruit technology to everyone). He made promises to various peoples including Lunarians and Fishmen. He raided AK to steal blueprints of ancient weapon technology and made Water 7 shipwrights build Pluton to oppose Uranus hold by the AK - reason Pluton was built by Water 7 and not AK is because Joy Boy was not AK king. The raid at AK enabled some traitor to take control over Uranus and to destroy the AK and to give it to the 20 kingdoms that won the war.
Joy Boy eventually didn’t succeed at his alternate plan and left all artefacts (Pluton, Poseidon, One Piece) behind to make someone in the future would fulfill his alternate plan.

I've said this for years, Joyboy had to be from the Ancient Kingdom.
All the evidence told us this from my own understanding at least. He apologised to Fishman Island in the Ancient Text which can surely means he sanctioned it. We knew the Poneglyphs came from the AK, so by deduction, he had to be from the AK.
There's no way he was able to get a personal apology on these poneglyphs if he wasn't from the AK and a very important figure too.
I think what happens too often in One Piece is a lot of the readers are dreamers, if the idea is not exciting enough, then it's not acceptable to most readers. It has to be something crazy and wacky.
King also doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't a leader of the Ancient Kingdom, it could mean he had a different definition for King the way Luffy also views King. For most people in One Piece, Pirate King means someone who has all the power and controls everything... that's what most people will use Ancient Weapons for.
Luffy views Pirate King as a title who makes everyone free whilst also living freely. Joyboy wanted to give Fishmen freedom to live under the sun like everyone else, and not have to be segregated from the world simply for being of a different race, and since he never achieved that, he might define that as having failed in becoming king.
Given that Luffy, Roger and Joyboy align similarly, quite likely they all share this definition of Pirate King/King.
He also did give an apology to FI for not being able to fulfil his promise, so this promise is likely related to what he defines as King, freedom.
Highly doubt he was an outlaw either. The AK was destroyed for having a philosophy that was different from the 20 kingdoms, and we know what the WG's philosophy is. Dictatorship, slavery and power - the AK would be the opposite, freedom.
Joyboy wasn't fighting the WG and also his own country - that doesn't make sense to me at least, he only fought the WG. The AK had to be assisting him, otherwise, there is no reason for the WG to destroy them.
If anything, if what you say is true, the AK should still exist and should have allied with the WG to destroy Joyboy, but that's highly unlikely.
Pretty sure Vegapunk already told us DFs come from imagination, not that they were actually manufactured. They're born from hope, and because they're unnatural existences, mother nature (symbolised as the sea/water) rejects DF users and sinks them down. If the story tells us something plain and simple, readers won't accept it which is something I've never understood.
Ultimately, I don't think there's any evidence that suggests that Joyboy was some sort of traitor. His record indicates he was a freedom fighter, otherwise he wouldn't have a goal to liberate and make Fishmen live equally with humans on land. And the AK's philosophy also aligns with Joyboy, one of freedom, science, etc. Whatever the WG is about, the opposite would pretty much be what the AK stood for. I just don't see why the WG would destroy the AK if both the AK and WG hated Joyboy,
